Reasons Families Make the Switch
Washington has some of the more detailed homeschool requirements in the country. Parents who provide home-based instruction must meet specific qualification criteria and maintain records of instruction in required subjects. Many families manage these requirements well for years. As students advance, some begin to want what a structured school provides: teachers who are certified specialists in individual subjects, a diploma recognized by Washington state universities, and a daily academic environment that holds them to a defined standard.
Virtual Preparatory Academy of Washington delivers a full K-12 public education entirely online. Students stay at home but gain Washington-certified teachers for every course, a Cognia-accredited curriculum, and a school community they belong to. For families asking how to switch to online school while keeping the benefits of home learning, VPA Washington offers that balance. Learn more about the school's approach on the About VPA Washington page.
How Enrollment Works in Washington
Under Washington Revised Code 28A.200.010, families providing home-based instruction must file an annual Declaration of Intent with their local school district superintendent by September 15 of each school year. The declaration must indicate that the parent is providing home-based instruction. When a family enrolls their student in a public school, the home-based instruction obligation ends. Families should notify their district superintendent that they are no longer providing home-based instruction to formally close their declaration.
Washington's compulsory attendance law requires school enrollment for children ages 8 through 17, with voluntary attendance possible starting at age 6. Families switching mid-year should confirm timing with their district to ensure a clean enrollment transition.
To enroll at VPA Washington, students must be Washington residents in grades K through 12. Kindergarten students must meet standard age eligibility for the enrollment year. Required documents include a birth certificate, proof of Washington residency, and current immunization records or a valid waiver. Students entering 12th grade must also provide a high school transcript.

Transferring Credits and Records
Washington does not have a uniform statewide policy for accepting homeschool credits into the public school system. VPA Washington reviews prior academic work on a case-by-case basis during the enrollment process. Families should bring documentation of completed coursework, assessments, and any records maintained under Washington's home-based instruction requirement.
Washington's home instruction rules require parents to maintain annual proof of progress, which may include assessment results or portfolio documentation. Families who have kept those records in good order are typically in a strong position during the credit review conversation at VPA Washington.
For families asking how do you switch to online school and make sure prior learning is recognized, the process at VPA Washington begins with what your family brings to the enrollment meeting. A counselor works with your family to determine the right grade placement and evaluate any prior credits.
What Students Can Expect in Online Public School
VPA Washington follows a traditional Monday-through-Friday school calendar. The day is built around live synchronous instruction from Washington-certified teachers and independent asynchronous coursework completed between live sessions. All live sessions are recorded so students can review content or make up any class they miss.
Washington state academic standards apply to all public school students, including those enrolled in online schools. VPA Washington's curriculum is aligned to Washington's standards, and students participate in required state assessments throughout their enrollment. Families receive access to a guardian Canvas dashboard for real-time visibility into grades, attendance, and coursework progress.
Teacher Support
Every course at VPA Washington is taught by a Washington-certified teacher who specializes in online instruction. Teachers lead live sessions, hold enrichment periods for students who need extra support, and use breakout rooms during class for targeted one-on-one and small-group assistance. Success Coaches support families throughout the school year, serving as the primary point of contact for questions that fall outside the individual classroom.
Live and Structured Independent Study
VPA Washington's live sessions are structured for active participation. Students interact with teachers and classmates, ask questions, and work through course material in real time. Independent coursework between live sessions develops the self-discipline that serves students well beyond the school year. Student Activities
VPA Washington students participate in clubs and extracurricular activities organized by the school throughout the year. In-person events and field trips give students opportunities to connect face to face with classmates and teachers. Students who wish to participate in sports may do so at their local school district with that district's approval.
Tips for a Smooth Transition
Notify your local school district superintendent that you are ending home-based instruction before or upon enrollment at VPA Washington. Washington requires this declaration to be filed annually, and closing it formally when you enroll in public school keeps your family's records clean. Complete a Choice Transfer from your local district to the Starbuck School District prior to enrollment.
Gather your proof of progress documentation from your home instruction years. Washington's annual progress requirement means many families have more documentation than they realize. Those records are directly useful in VPA Washington's credit review process.
Set up a consistent workspace and schedule before the school year begins. Washington public schools have defined attendance requirements, and VPA Washington applies those same standards. Access the school calendar and additional onboarding resources on the VPA Washington parent and student resources page.
